Breast Augmentation Basics – Still the Most Popular Cosmetic Procedure in the U.S.

Breast Augmentation Basics – Still the Most Popular Cosmetic Procedure in the U.S.

Big butts have been in the spotlight lately, but breast augmentation still ranks as the most commonly preformed cosmetic procedure.  It’s not just “all about that bass.”  Women with big butts and full hips are also seeking more voluptuous breasts to achieve a coveted hourglass figure.

If you’ve experienced loss of shape and volume as a result of childbirth, breast-feeding or aging, or weren’t naturally blessed with full breasts, then breast augmentation can be the perfect choice for you as well.  Breast augmentation will restore a more youthful, perkier appearance and shape to the breasts and can even increase self-confidence.

The two types of implants to choose from for your breast augmentation are silicone (gummy) or saline.  Saline implants are made with silicone shells and filled with sterile salt water.  They feel much firmer than silicone implants and tend to have a less natural appearance.  If there is a leak in the implant, the body absorbs the saline and the implant immediately deflates.  Silicone implants have silicone shells and are filled with a thick, gummy silicone gel.  These implants have a much softer feel and provide a more natural look. With the newest generation of silicone breast implants, if the implant ruptures, the gel will not travel throughout the body, but will remains in the implant shell.  Silicone implants won’t collapse if there is a leak and your plastic surgeon will have to exchange the ruptured implant.  Regular visits to your doctor ensure the proper function of the implants, as do ultrasounds and MRI screenings.

If you’ve been considering a new set for summer, now is the time to take the plunge into lower necklines and fuller bikini tops.  Breast augmentation surgery generally takes around an hour to perform and is done under general anesthesia.  It is an outpatient procedure unless it is done in conjunction with other requested procedures.  Dependent upon your anatomy and size of implants, your plastic surgeon will create the incisions around the nipples, in the fold under the breasts, or in the armpits.  After undergoing breast augmentation, it typically takes 3-5 days for the soreness to subside and you feel like yourself.  No strenuous exercise is allowed for the first 3 weeks after surgery, but after that you’re in the clear.

If you are interested in learning more about breast augmentation and the type of implants that are right for you, please call Dr. Sam Jejurikar’s office at (214) 827-2814.

    Happy Birthday “Baby Got Back”!!!

Oh, my God, Becky…”Baby Got Back” is 23!

All hail Sir-Mix-a-Lot, the king and creator of the world’s most endeared and enduring pop booty anthem.  His timeless ode to the beauty and glory of the big booty, “Baby Got Back” turns 23 years old May 7th!

It’s amazing how quickly time flies and how popular and relevant this song still is today.  Amidst the Kim Kardashian-esque, booty-twerking obsession of our culture is the mainstream surge of the current rump records like Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Base” and Jennifer Lopez’s “Booty.”

Most recently, Nicki Minaj’s hit, “Anaconda” featured the beloved “Baby Got Back,” introducing the popular track to the younger generation, as well as a few other people on earth who had somehow never heard it before.  “Baby Got Back” is now more popular than ever and ranks as the number one booty anthem of all time, according to VH1.

Men, women and plastic surgeons around the globe owe Sir-Mix-a-Lot (and JLo) a big thank you for helping to ignite the love and fascination we have with a woman’s perfectly round, voluptuous derrière.  The release of “Baby Got Back” not only let us all know how some men really feel about the lower curves of a woman’s body, but gave women walking around with some “junk in the trunk” more pride and confidence about the way their bodies are shaped.

This proclamation for the love of big butts has opened the door to a worldwide craze revolving around big butts and making them bigger.  If you’re a woman who is not naturally blessed with an ample behind don’t fret because your plastic surgeon can change that for you.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the number of butt augmentation procedures increased by 86% between 2013 and 2014. Butt augmentation procedures preformed by experienced board certified plastic surgeons have proven to be the safest, most successful way to enhance the booty.  This number will most definitely continue to rise in 2015 as the women who’ve already undergone a Brazilian Butt Lift or Buttock Augmentation with Implants become the envy of every bottom-less female they strut in front of.

If your are interested in learning more about how the Brazilian Butt Lift or Buttock Augmentation with Implants can help you achieve a fuller and shapelier buttocks worthy of a song, please contact the Dallas or Plano offices of Dr. Jejurikar at (214) 827-2814 to schedule your consultation.

Plastic Surgery Becoming More Popular with Men

Plastic surgery is more popular than ever with men and sharing that you’ve had any type of cosmetic surgery and your experience is no longer taboo to talk about.  Not only is going under the knife something the majority of people who’ve had it are proud to share with their friends and family, but something people are openly announcing to the public via social media forums like RealSelf, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Not surprisingly, the number of men undergoing plastic surgery and receiving in-office treatments like Botox, Dysport, lip injections and facial fillers has surged over recent years; and they’re not embarrassed to talk about it.  Men today seem to be more self-confident and are openly seeking aesthetic improvements.

The range of plastic surgery procedures that are the most requested among men tend to be liposuction of the abs, love handles and back, gynecomastia, or male chest reduction, neck lifts, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).  Generally, the types of men choosing to have these procedures are CEO’s, athletic dads, college students, body builders, and of course male models – showing that plastic surgery is popular and considered by men across the board.

Often, men are seeking to have surgery because of their careers and they want to remain competitive in the marketplace.  Men are also turning to plastic surgery to restore a more youthful appearance, or they want to get back into shape and get rid of some extra fat.  In order to obtain the results they are not getting from their efforts of working out in the gym, men are getting pectoral implants, calf implants, and even gluteal implants.  They’re also choosing to undergo body-sculpting liposuction to better define their abs and back.

Plastic surgery and in-office cosmetic treatments have typically been thought of as something predominantly for women until recent years.  Now, with the variety of plastic surgery procedures available, it is something both men and women are seeking as a way to become the best version of themselves and to gain a competitive advantage.  The popularity of plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures will likely continue to increase in popularity as society continues to embrace the positive effects plastic surgery can have on our professional and social lives.

Please call Dr. Jejurikar’s office at (214) 827-2814 if you’d like to learn more about the plastic surgery options available and to schedule your consultation.

Plastic Surgery Can Make You More Likeable!

It’s now been proven – plastic surgery can actually make you more likable to other people.

We’ve always known that plastic surgery can make you look younger, but a study published earlier this month in the journal JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery found that women who underwent facial cosmetic surgery were perceived to be more likable than they were prior to having surgery. The study retrospectively evaluated the preoperative and postoperative photographs of 30 women who underwent plastic surgery over 5 years. Procedures that the women underwent included facelift, upper lid blephroplasty (upper eyelid lift), lower blepharoplasty (lower eyelid rejuvenation), brow lift, neck lift, and / or chin implant. The 60 photographs (30 before and 30 after) were divided into 6 groups of 10 photos each; each group had 5 preoperative and 5 postoperative photos. The same patient’s preoperative and postoperative photos were not included in any one group. The researchers than asked 24 other individuals to rate the photographs for personality traits, including aggressiveness, extroversion, like ability, trustworthiness, social skills and risk seeking, as well as for femininity and attractiveness.

What did they find? When comparing postoperative photos with preoperative ones, patients were found to have increased likability, social skills, attractiveness and femininity; all of these were statistically significant findings. Of the procedures performed, facelift and lower eyelid procedures resulted in the greatest perceived changes in personality. The researchers speculate that, because these procedures turn up the corners of the mouth and reduce the appearance of fatigue around the eyes, they made the women’s baseline facial expressions appear happier and more joyous. This in turn led others to believe that they were more likable.

So what does this all mean? It’s well known in the field of psychology that people tend to make judgements regarding other’s character and personality based on their appearance. In addition, people tend to make judgements within mere seconds of seeing another person’s face for the first time. It’s also known that these judgements tend to be consistent with the way that other people also perceive the same face.

From the time we are young, we are taught not “to judge a book by its cover.” That dictum, however,  is not consistent with the world in which we live. Snap judgements about your character and personality are formed within seconds from everyone you encounter. Thus, even though facial cosmetic surgery won’t make you a better person, it’ll make others think you are more likable, attractive and possess better social skills.

A Healthy You Before the New You!

If you are interested in having plastic surgery, it is important to understand the risks
associated with surgery and to know if you’re an ideal candidate beforehand. The
ideal surgical candidate is in overall good health, doesn’t smoke, is at a healthy
weight and has reasonable expectations of the surgery’s outcome. It is important to
understand that certain health conditions, medications, and smoking can cause
problems with post-surgical healing, or could seriously increase the risk of
    complications after surgery.

Nutrition: A well-balanced and healthy diet includes consuming plenty of fruits and
vegetables along with protein-rich foods like lean meat, fish, poultry, beans, eggs,
cheese, nuts, tofu, milk, cottage cheese, yogurt, and protein drinks. You should also
drink at least 6 – 8, eight-ounce cups of water daily to keep your body well hydrated.
Poor nutrition is linked to post-surgical infections, and diets too low in protein are
associated with higher rates of post-surgical complications.

Exercise: Regularly. Patients that do not take part in regular exercise have higher
risks of cardiac complications during or after surgery and may experience an
extended recovery period. Ideal candidates should be within 20% of their ideal
weight. Otherwise, they run the risk of loose skin and compromising the benefits
gained from plastic surgery if they lose weight post-operatively.

Smoking: Smoking reduces blood flow and interferes with your body’s healing
process. It can potentially cause wound healing complications, loss of skin and a
slow recovery. Smoking also reduces your resistance to infections and can increase
the incidence of pulmonary complications after anesthesia. It complicates lung
function as well as cardiovascular health. Patients should not smoke for at least 4
weeks prior to and 4 weeks after undergoing any surgical procedure.

Alcohol: Use of alcohol may lead to post-surgical complications and infections.
It particularly places you at high risk of developing a postoperative complication
related to bleeding. You should follow Dr. Jejurikar’s guidelines regarding how long
you should refrain from alcoholic beverages prior to and following your surgery.

Medication & Herbal Supplements: Blood thinners, birth control pills and other
medications and supplements can increase the risk of excessive bleeding during
surgery as well as blood clots and pulmonary embolism after surgery. Per Dr.
    Jejurikar’s instruction, patients will need to stop taking their discussed medications;
the timing varies on the particular medication. Abrupt withdrawal of some medication can
lead to complications or health issues and should be discussed with Dr. J or the doctor
    who originally prescribed the medication.

Diabetes: Blood sugar levels need to be under control before undergoing any
surgical procedures. Elevated blood sugar from diabetes or pre-diabetes can
contribute to poor healing and increases risk of infection of the surgical site.
Keeping your blood sugar in control before, during and after your surgery will
reduce risk of infection of the incisions and ensure better healing.

High blood pressure (hypertension) cardiovascular or circulatory / heart
conditions: These health issues may increase the risk of complications during
surgery. Patients with these complications need to receive chest X-rays, lab tests,
electrocardiograms and stress tests prior to their scheduled surgery.

Emotionally healthy: Cosmetic patients need to be emotionally stable and have
realistic expectations of the surgery’s outcome. Patients need to possess a strong
emotional foundation to be equipped for their own reactions post-operatively, as
well as those of others. Prior to surgery, patients should discuss realistic goals and
expectations of the cosmetic procedures with Dr. Jejurikar.

All patients have different circumstances that require distinct pre and post-surgical
preparation. Choosing not to take the proper precautions before and after your
cosmetic surgery can greatly increase the risk of problems associated with
anesthesia, infection, bleeding or loss of skin during and after surgery. Dr. Jejurikar
assesses each patient’s health and risks individually before recommending the best
pre and post-operative surgical plan to ensure you have the best possible
    experience and outcome.

If you have any questions about cosmetic surgery and would like to schedule your
consultation with Dr. Jejurikar, please call his office at (214) 827-2814.

    Open Your Eyes!

Our eyes are our most important facial features and the “windows to our soul.”  We don’t want them sending the wrong messages: that we are mostly tired, sad, or angry.  By our mid 30’s and early 40’s, aging and genetics begin to cause the muscles and skin around our eyes to weaken and sag.  Blepharoplasty, or Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery, is a surgical procedure that is performed to improve the appearance and function of the upper and / or lower eyelids.  The surgery can be done alone or in combination with a brow lift or facelift to restore a more youthful, energetic appearance. It is often the first cosmetic surgery that patient’s seek to have.

Most often, blepharoplasty is performed in the OR under general anesthesia. In a few cases, if only simple skin excision is required, Dr. Jejurikar may perform your blepharoplasty in the office. As previously mentioned, eyelid surgery can be preformed alone or in conjunction with other types of facial rejuvenation procedures.  Prior to surgery, Dr. Jejurikar will mark the areas on your skin where the incisions will be made.  In order to minimize the appearance of scars, the incisions will be made in the natural creases and lines of your upper and / or lower eyelids.  He will remove and reposition fat deposits from the eyelids and then tighten the muscles around your eyes.  He will remove any remaining excess skin and close the incisions with sutures and cover them with sterile dressings.  The sutures and dressings will stay on until your first post-operative appointment with Dr. Jejurikar.  This appointment is typically 5-7 days after your procedure.

Following surgery, swelling, bruising and soreness of your eyes and the surrounding areas can be expected.  You may also experience dry eyes and mild irritation around the eyelids.  It’s important that you prepare for this ahead of time and avoid any big social engagements for at least 2-3 weeks after surgery! Dr. Jejurikar will prescribe you the appropriate medication and remedies to help you recover.  In addition, homeopathic medications such as Arnica and Bromelain can help the bruising and swelling improve faster. Complete recovery from your eyelid surgery can be expected in 4-6 weeks.  With diligence and proper care on your part, any scarring from the surgical incisions will fade and become relatively imperceptible over the next year.

If you would like to schedule a consultation with Dr. Jejurikar to discuss eyelid surgery or any other type of cosmetic procedure, please call his office at Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute at (214) 827–2814.

Simple Steps to Lessen Your Down Time after Facelift and other Facial Cosmetic Surgery

You may feel ready for a facelift, eyelid surgery, or nose job (rhinoplasty), but are hesitant because the recovery seems too daunting to undertake.  That being said, the typical recovery period only lasts 2-3 weeks and there are steps you can take to make your recovery as easy and quick as possible.

Dr. Jejurikar stresses that it is important that you avoid certain medications and supplements at least two weeks prior and two weeks after having a facelift.  This includes NSAIDs (such as motrin, ibuprofen, toradol), aspirin, Plavix (clopidrogel), Coumadin (warfarin),vitamin E and St. John’s Wort.  These medications and supplements thin the blood and increase bleeding during surgery, which causes significant post-operative bruising.

Herbal supplements deserve special attention. Many patients do not inform their plastic surgeon that they are taking these medications because they perceive them to be safe and natural. This does not mean that they do not cause side effects! As a general rule, stopping these medications at least two weeks prior to surgery can significantly decrease bleeding during and after surgery. LESS BLEEDING CORRELATES TO LESS BRUISING!

Your body will need plenty of rest initially after your surgery and it is key to keep your head elevated at a 30-45 degree angle when you’re lying down.  It is recommended that you keep your head elevated in this position for at least 7-10 days following surgery. Elevating your head helps the swelling drain from your face and neck faster.

There are over-the-counter supplements that aid in the reduction of swelling and bruising.  The most beneficial homeopathic supplements recommended by Dr. Jejurikar are Arnica Montana, Bromelain and Quercetin.  Using Bromelain and Quercetin in conjunction with Arnica Montana has proven useful in reducing post-operative bruising and swelling.

    • Arnica Montana, derived from alpine plants, is anti-inflammatory, can mend bruised tissue and speeds recovery.  The patient typically starts taking it 3 days prior to surgery, and for at least one week following surgery.
    • Bromelain, derived from the stem of pineapples, helps combat inflammation.  It should be taken for the first full week after surgery.
    • Quercetin is a plant-derived flavonoid found in green and black tea, apples and grains.  It inhibits production of histamines, which prevents inflammation and speeds up the recovery process.  Quercetin should be taken for one week immediately following surgery.

Arnica Montana, Bromelain and Quercetin all can be purchased prior to your surgery and can speed up your post-op recovery tremendously.

The antioxidant, Vitamin C, aids in immunity and promotes healing.  It is the key nutrient required for collagen formation and should be taken pre and post-operatively.

Nonsurgical alternatives to a more youthful appearance

You may be noticing a few more wrinkles on your face and feel like you’re looking a bit tired these days regardless of your beauty routine.  You’re not quite ready for a surgical facelift, but you’d like to do something to rejuvenate your appearance.  So what are your options?

Botox and is competitors (Dysport, Xeomin) are one of the quickest and easiest cosmetic treatments to reduce signs of aging.  They are used to improve frown lines between the brows, crow’s feet around the eyes, wrinkles of the forehead, and neck cords.  The treatment typically takes 30 – 45 minutes and lasts from 3 – 4 months. The best rule of thumb is to remember that Botox works great for wrinkles in the upper one-third of the face; it’s not as effective in the lower two-thirds.

A “Liquid Facelift” is an extension of the same theme.  The Liquid Facelift utilizes Botox and facial fillers to soften wrinkles and creases, enhance the natural contours of the face, and restore volume to the cheeks and lips.   This safe, in-office option quickly provides you with noticeable results at a lower cost compared to surgery.

Two of the most common fillers used during a Liquid Facelift are Voluma and Juvederm.  Both of these products are FDA approved hyaluronic acid based fillers.  Voluma is used to lift the mid-face by restoring lost cheek volume and lasts up to 2 years after treatment.  Juvederm is used to fill and soften the nasolabial folds around your mouth (laugh lines) and to plump thinning lips.  Juvederm lasts up to a year or longer.

Laser skin resurfacing is another great options you can choose to improve and rejuvenate your appearance.  It is ideal for treating fine lines and deeper wrinkles, sun damage, irregular skin pigmentation, and even acne scars.  In general, the more aggressive the laser treatment, the greater the downtime.  Downtime can range from 3 – 10 days and is dependent upon the strength of the laser used for resurfacing.  Some patients may require multiple treatments to achieve the best results.

Regardless of whether you have a surgical or nonsurgical procedure, it is imperative to protect your investment. Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, limit alcohol consumption, quit smoking, eat a healthy diet and exercise in order to maintain your results.

All of these treatments are great options for attaining a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.  Most of these treatments can be done quickly in your plastic surgeon’s office and require little or no downtime.   If you are interested in learning more about any of theses facial rejuvenation options, contact the office of board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jejurikar, at 214-827-2814 to schedule your consultation.

    Aging gracefully after a facelift

It’s tough for anyone to watch his or her youthful appearance start to fade.  Eating well and exercising regularly does wonders to maintain a great appearance, but it still can’t prevent loose skin, bags under the eyes and sagging jowls.  Thankfully, there are many cosmetic options available to assist us in the aging process.

Facelifts provide the most dramatic results to improve loose and wrinkled facial skin, deep creases and skin that seems saggy. There are variations of the facelift procedure and different types of anesthesia that can be used during the surgery.  The most appropriate choice for you will be made by the plastic surgeon during your initial consultation.  The surgeon will also discuss how the facelift and any additional procedure is preformed, what you can expect after surgery, the pre and post-operative instructions and typical recovery time.

During a facelift, incisions are made under the hairline at the temples and around the ear to the lower scalp.  The incision locations allow the scars to remain obscure beneath the hair and hidden in the natural creases of the ears and face.  Next, the fat beneath the skin is sculpted or redistributed and the deep tissues and muscles are lifted.  Finally, the facial skin is re-draped and the excess skin is trimmed.  If a neck lift is also being preformed, an incision will be made under the chin.  Swelling and bruising after having a facelift should be expected and will usually subside within two to three weeks.  Most patients are able to return to their normal activities after three to four weeks of recovery.

The best candidates for having a facelift are those who are in good physical and mental health and have the desire to turn back the clock for a more refreshed and youthful appearance.  As a restorative procedure, a facelift is not intended to change your fundamental appearance.  The results generally last for 10 years or more, but will not stop the aging process.  Therefore, it is important that all facelift candidates have realistic goals and expectations about the surgery.

Great results after a facelift require an experienced surgeon to achieve the best results.  Dr. Jejurikar is a board certified plastic surgeon that has extensive training and experience in facial aesthetic surgery.  If you are interested in learning more about facelifts and additional facial cosmetic procedures, call Dr. J’s office at 214-827-2814 to schedule your consultation.

Preparing for the Optimal Recovery After Plastic Surgery

Having cosmetic surgery is exciting to most patients, but the uneasiness of not knowing how you will feel and look right after surgery can overshadow the anticipation.   It is important to discuss how to prepare for the days and weeks following plastic surgery with your board certified plastic surgeon prior to having any procedure.

Dr. Jejurikar always encourages his patients at Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute to begin to plan their recovery process a few weeks in advance.  Eating properly, not smoking, and modifying your intake of certain medications and supplements are important for optimal healing.  Ask your surgeon which medications and supplements need to be discontinued prior to surgery.  The popular supplements Arnica and Bromelain may help minimize bruising after certain procedures, but should not be taken without your surgeon’s approval.  After your surgery, be sure to follow the instructions regarding the post-operative medications your doctor has prescribed and contact the doctor’s office with any questions. Dr. Jejurikar suggests taking vitamins or metabolic supplements prior to your procedure; be sure to bring this up with your surgeon as well.

Giving your family, friends and work advanced notice that you’ll need downtime for recovery will enable you to take the appropriate time to heal and allow you to not overexert yourself too soon.  If at all possible, prepare to have someone readily available to you for the first 24 – 72 hours following surgery to help you move around your home, help you to the restroom and give you your medication.  It is beneficial for those who will be caring for you after your plastic surgery to understand that you will be depending on them for rides, help with the children and around the house for a specific timeframe.  The length of time you’ll need assistance will most likely depend on the type of plastic surgery you have.

Having plastic surgery hurts and you should expect to be sore, swollen and bruised afterward.  Typically, the first couple of days following surgery will be the most uncomfortable.  You’ll mostly rest these days, which will help your body heal.  However, you also need to get up and move around as much as possible to keep your blood flowing and prevent blood clots from forming.  Some procedures require drains to be placed in order to collect excessive fluid and control swelling.  Patients can also experience normal drainage out of the small cannula incisions after liposuction.  Your surgeon should provide you with the specific post-operative instructions that will need to be followed.

You may not have much of an appetite initially after surgery, but it is important to drink plenty of fluids and eat a nutritious diet.  Your body needs plenty of nutrients and protein to help it mend quickly.  Constipation is one of the most common side effects of the pain medication patients take during recovery.  Eating a lot of fiber will help to prevent the problem.  An over-the-counter stool softener can also be taken to help alleviate the symptoms of constipation.

Finally, you are having plastic surgery to look better, but remember that you will not look wonderful immediately after the procedure. Swelling, bruising and asymmetry are all very common and expected initially after surgery. It’s important you temper your expectations in the first several weeks after your procedure. Expecting immediate results will undoubtedly lead to unnecessary worry and anxiety.

Preparing for your recovery in advance and talking to your doctor about post-operative expectations can answer your questions and alleviate much of the anxiety you may feel before having plastic surgery.  It can allow you to focus on the excitement of having the procedure you’ve been looking forward to!
