Liposuction FAQs

Liposuction FAQs, Dallas, TX

Liposuction Questions, Answered Honestly

Liposuction is the most common operation in my practice, on its own and as part of nearly every body contouring procedure I perform. These are the questions I am asked most often at consultation, answered the way I would answer them in the room. For the full picture of how I approach the operation, including Lipo 360, VASER and high-definition work, read my liposuction page.

Candidacy

Who liposuction is for, and who it is not for.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

The best candidates are at or near a stable weight, have specific areas of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise, and have reasonably firm skin over those areas. Age matters less than skin quality. If your weight has been stable for at least three months and you are healthy and not smoking, you are very likely a candidate. The consultation is where I confirm that by examining your skin and the fat itself.

I am overweight. Can I still have liposuction?

Liposuction is a shaping operation, not a weight loss operation. I can safely remove up to about five liters of fat in one outpatient session, which changes your shape noticeably but moves the scale only a few pounds. If you are significantly above a healthy weight, the honest advice is to get closer to your goal first, ideally with a weight that has held steady for a few months, so the result reflects your final body rather than a stage in between. Many of my patients now arrive after GLP-1 weight loss, and liposuction is excellent for the stubborn pockets that remain.

Will liposuction fix loose skin or a belly that bulges?

No, and this is the question that matters most. Liposuction removes fat. It does not remove loose skin and it does not repair separated abdominal muscles. If you pinch your lower abdomen and the skin is loose, or your belly bulges when you sit up, liposuction alone will leave you with less fat under the same skin. In that case a tummy tuck combined with Lipo 360 is the right operation, and I will tell you so rather than perform the wrong one. For mild laxity, BodyTite radiofrequency can tighten skin as the fat is removed.

What areas can be treated?

Abdomen, flanks (love handles), lower and upper back, bra line, inner and outer thighs, knees, arms, chin and neck, and the male chest for gynecomastia. Most patients treat several areas in one session. Delicate areas like the face and neck are treated with small cannulas and a very conservative hand; the hands, feet and ankles are rarely good candidates.

Is there an age limit?

No. I perform liposuction on patients from their twenties to their seventies. What changes with age is skin elasticity, so for older patients the conversation is more often about whether skin tightening or removal should be part of the plan.

Technique

Why the tool and the plan matter more than the brand name.

There are so many kinds of liposuction. Which one is best?

The one that fits your tissue and your goal, chosen by a surgeon who has all of them available. I perform most body liposuction with VASER, which uses ultrasound to loosen fat before it is suctioned, because it removes fat more completely and evenly, causes less bruising, and encourages the skin to tighten. I use traditional tumescent liposuction for smaller areas and combination cases, high-definition VASER for fit patients who want visible muscle contour, and BodyTite when mild skin laxity needs addressing (see the BodyTite questions below). Laser, water-jet and other branded systems are marketing categories more than clinical ones; the surgeon’s judgment determines the result.

What is Lipo 360?

Liposuction of the abdomen, flanks and lower back in a single session, so the waist is narrowed from every angle. Patients usually come in pointing at one area, and spot treating it flattens that spot but leaves the rest of the torso unchanged, which rarely looks right. For most patients I recommend Lipo 360 because the result reads as a smaller, more defined torso rather than a patch. Read more on my liposuction page.

What is high-definition liposuction?

VASER used selectively to remove fat along the lines of the underlying muscles, revealing abdominal and chest definition. It works in fit men and women with good skin and a low enough body fat that the muscle is close to the surface. It is not a substitute for being fit; it reveals what is already there.

Do you offer awake or “tickle” liposuction?

I perform the large majority of liposuction under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility, with a board-certified anesthesiologist. Awake liposuction limits how much fat can be safely removed and how thoroughly an area can be treated, and I do not feature it in my practice. For a small single area, local anesthesia with sedation is sometimes appropriate and we can discuss it.

What is BodyTite?

BodyTite is radiofrequency-assisted liposuction. A thin probe passes under the skin while a paired electrode glides over the surface, and the radiofrequency energy between them does two things at once: it melts fat for easier removal and heats the deeper layer of the skin to a controlled temperature that makes collagen contract and remodel. The result is skin that tightens as it heals rather than simply deflating. I add it during liposuction in the same session, under the same anesthesia, through the same small incisions.

Who is BodyTite for?

Patients with mild to moderate skin laxity who want liposuction but are worried about loose skin afterward: the lower abdomen after children, the upper arms, inner thighs, above the knees and the neck. It fills the gap between liposuction alone, which tightens nothing, and an excision like a tummy tuck or arm lift, which removes skin and leaves a long scar. It does not replace those operations when the skin is truly loose, and I will tell you which side of that line you are on.

How much tightening does BodyTite give, and when?

Manufacturer studies report skin contraction in the range of 25 to 40 percent, and that is consistent with what I see in good candidates, though it varies with age and skin quality. Tightening is gradual: some firmness is visible at six weeks, but the collagen remodeling continues for six to twelve months, so judge the result at the one-year mark. It adds equipment and time to the operation, so it carries an additional cost that is quoted up front.

Can the fat you remove be used somewhere else?

Yes. Fat removed during liposuction can be purified and grafted to the buttocks and hips in a Brazilian butt lift, to the breasts, or to the face in the same operation. Fat grafting is one of the most useful tools in my practice.

Surgery day

What actually happens.

How long does liposuction take?

Usually one to three hours depending on how many areas are treated. Lipo 360 with fat transfer runs toward the longer end. You arrive about an hour early for marking, which I do with you standing, and you go home the same day.

What kind of anesthesia is used?

General anesthesia for most cases, administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. The treated areas are also infiltrated with tumescent fluid containing local anesthetic and epinephrine, which numbs the area, limits bleeding and keeps you comfortable after you wake up.

Will I have scars?

The incisions are a few millimeters long and placed in natural creases or in locations hidden by underwear. They fade to small dots most people never notice. I start a scar protocol in the office once the skin has healed.

Will liposuction leave me lumpy or uneven?

Contour irregularities were a real problem in the early years of liposuction and are still seen when it is performed aggressively with large cannulas or by inexperienced hands. With VASER, small cannulas, treating the whole aesthetic unit rather than one spot, and a surgeon who does this every week, the result should be smooth. Mild unevenness during the first six to eight weeks is swelling, not the final shape.

Recovery

Realistic timelines from a practice that does this daily.

What is recovery like?

Expect soreness similar to an intense workout for the first few days, with bruising and swelling that peak around day three and then steadily improve. You wear a compression garment for about four to six weeks. Most patients are walking the same day, back to desk work within a few days to a week, driving once they are comfortable turning and off any sedating medication, and back to exercise at two to four weeks, lower body first.

Will I need pain medication?

I use a non-opioid pain protocol, and most patients manage comfortably without narcotics. The long-acting local anesthetic placed during surgery carries you through the first day, and a scheduled combination of non-opioid medications handles the rest.

How long will the swelling last?

Most swelling is gone by six to eight weeks, which is when the shape becomes clear. The skin continues to tighten and the contour continues to refine for about six months. I offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy at Foundry Hyperbaric and Wellness to reduce swelling and speed healing in the first weeks.

Do I need lymphatic massage?

It is helpful but not mandatory. Lymphatic drainage massage starting about a week after surgery can reduce swelling and soften firm areas sooner. My team can recommend therapists who work with my patients regularly.

Results

What to expect, and what lasts.

When will I see my result?

You will see a change immediately, but swelling hides the real result. The shape becomes clear at six to eight weeks and continues to improve through six months. The before-and-after photos on this site are taken at two months or later for that reason.

Will the fat come back?

The fat cells that are removed are gone for good. The cells that remain, in the treated area and everywhere else, can still enlarge if you gain weight. Keep your weight stable and the result lasts for years; the 18-month case below is a good example.

How much weight will I lose?

Very little, usually a few pounds, even when several liters of fat are removed. What changes is inches and proportion. Patients consistently drop a size or two at the waist without the scale moving much, which surprises people until they understand that liposuction is sculpting, not weight loss.

What does liposuction cost in Dallas?

Liposuction is quoted as an all-inclusive package that depends mainly on how many areas are treated, the technique (VASER, high-definition and BodyTite add equipment and time), whether fat transfer is included, and the anesthesia and facility time involved. Treating several areas in one session costs less than treating them separately. You will receive an exact quote at your consultation, and financing is available. Cosmetic liposuction is not covered by insurance.

Is liposuction safe?

In an accredited facility, with a board-certified plastic surgeon and anesthesiologist, within safe volume limits, liposuction has an excellent safety record. Risks include bruising, swelling, temporary numbness, contour irregularity, fluid collection (seroma), and rarely infection or blood clots. I review every one of these with you, and my protocols, from compression and early walking to volume limits, are built to minimize them.
