    Dr. Jejurikar's Blog

Our eyes are our most important facial features and the “windows to our soul.”  We don’t want them sending the wrong messages: that we are mostly tired, sad, or angry.  By our mid 30’s and early 40’s, aging and genetics begin to cause the muscles and skin around our eyes to weaken and sag.  Blepharoplasty, or Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery, is a surgical procedure that is performed to improve the appearance and function of the upper and / or lower eyelids.  The surgery can be done alone or in combination with a brow lift or facelift to restore a more youthful, energetic appearance. It is often the first cosmetic surgery that patient’s seek to have.

Most often, blepharoplasty is performed in the OR under general anesthesia. In a few cases, if only simple skin excision is required, Dr. Jejurikar may perform your blepharoplasty in the office. As previously mentioned, eyelid surgery can be preformed alone or in conjunction with other types of facial rejuvenation procedures.  Prior to surgery, Dr. Jejurikar will mark the areas on your skin where the incisions will be made.  In order to minimize the appearance of scars, the incisions will be made in the natural creases and lines of your upper and / or lower eyelids.  He will remove and reposition fat deposits from the eyelids and then tighten the muscles around your eyes.  He will remove any remaining excess skin and close the incisions with sutures and cover them with sterile dressings.  The sutures and dressings will stay on until your first post-operative appointment with Dr. Jejurikar.  This appointment is typically 5-7 days after your procedure.

Following surgery, swelling, bruising and soreness of your eyes and the surrounding areas can be expected.  You may also experience dry eyes and mild irritation around the eyelids.  It’s important that you prepare for this ahead of time and avoid any big social engagements for at least 2-3 weeks after surgery! Dr. Jejurikar will prescribe you the appropriate medication and remedies to help you recover.  In addition, homeopathic medications such as Arnica and Bromelain can help the bruising and swelling improve faster. Complete recovery from your eyelid surgery can be expected in 4-6 weeks.  With diligence and proper care on your part, any scarring from the surgical incisions will fade and become relatively imperceptible over the next year.
