Dermal fillers, including Juvederm, Restylane and Radiesse, are some of the most popular procedures in plastic surgery offices through out the world.. These treatments, which are performed quickly in the office. give injectors the ability to reverse the visible effects of aging in an instant. Allergan, the makers of Juvederm and Botox, recently received approval from the FDA for Juvederm Voluma XC. It is the first filler approved to enhance cheek volume. Voluma is the latest and longest lasting injectable HA filler to hit the market.
Voluma is comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally produced material in all of our skin. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar that gives the skin a plump appearance. Levels of HA in the skin decline with age. Unlike other HA fillers, Voluma is substantially more cross-linked, producing a filler that can actually lift the cheek and lasts considerably longer.
Voluma lasts up to two years and the results are visible immediately after injection. It is the only HA filler approved to enhance facial volume deficiency.
Voluma is the only HA filler approved to treat loss of facial volume. Sculptra was approved around 2004 to treat the facial atrophy seen in HIV patients, but it can result in hard bumps under the skin. Other HA fillers such as Restylane, Perlane and Juvederm are great for filling lines but are not FDA approved to treat facial volume loss and do not last nearly as long as Voluma does. For this reason, Voluma is more expensive than other HA fillers.
