To be a Member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), a surgeon must be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Membership to the ASPS is strictly limited to Board Certified Plastic Surgeons.
To be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), a surgeon must have successfully completed a 3 to 5 year residency in Plastic Surgery, then pass a written exam and an oral exam. Certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery is among the hardest of certifications to obtain in the the medical field.
This may seem confusing, but your due diligence will pay when you choose to put yourself in well trained, well educated hands. Members of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons range from Radiology to OBGYN to Dermatology, and many of their members have not even had basic surgical training, let alone plastic surgery training. So please take the time to research your surgeon.
