More than half of all men in the United States are affected by enlarged breast tissues. Gynecomastia can be caused by several conditions: hormonal imbalance, reaction to medications or drugs, or most commonly, for no known reason.
Whatever the cause, if you are a man with gynecomastia, it can leave you feeling self-conscious and it can greatly impact your self-esteem. Men often feel too embarrassed to take off their shirts in public or in a locker room.
Am I a candidate for male breast reduction?
The procedure can be performed on men of all ages who are in good health, both physically and emotionally. The best candidates for male breast reduction surgery have firm, elastic skin. Patients with excess skin still are candidates, but may require additional incisions to eliminate some of the extra skin.
The Procedure
Male breast reduction surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes one to three hours. Dr. Jejurikar employs several techniques to perform male breast reduction depending on your goals and which procedures you feel comfortable with:
- Liposuction, if the enlarged breasts are primarily caused by excess fatty tissue, or
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction, if the enlarged breasts are firm and less fatty, or
- In the presence of excess glandular tissue, the tissue will be surgically removed and liposuction performed.
Recovery
Following male breast reduction surgery, you will experience bruising, swelling, and discomfort for a few days. Dr. Jejurikar asks his patients to wear a compression garment after surgery; the specific amount of time depends on the amount of tissue removed and the natural elasticity of the skin.
