Fat Grafting
If you’ve ever gazed into the mirror and wished that you could “take a little from here” and “put a little there”, your dreams can come true! One of the most popular new recontouring treatments available is fat grafting.
There are several benefits to fat grafting:
- It is one of the most well-tolerated fillers available
- It is natural-looking and long-lasting
- It is safe
- It is an effective filler used for changing body contour, revising scars, filling depressions created by liposuction, and rejuvenating the hands and face.
Am I a good candidate for fat grafting?
If you are in good health and do not smoke, and you wish to fill in volume-deficient areas of your hands, cheeks, eyelids, lips, nasolabial folds (marionette lines), or have depressions from previous liposuction treatments, you may be a good candidate for fat grafting. In mini-fat grafting procedures, small volumes of fat are transferred. In bigger procedures, large volumes of fat are removed through extensive liposuction and used for volume enhancement, most commonly of the buttocks (Brazilian Butt Lift) and breast.
Each patient’s anatomy and proportions vary, and the decision to utilize fat injection techniques depends on the goals of the patient as well as Dr. Jejurikar.
The Procedure
Fat injection procedure is conducted either under a local or general anesthetic, depending on the amount of fat needed for treatment. After you are placed under anesthesia, tiny incisions are made in the areas to be treated. Then, fat is harvested using a special suction cannula (tube). Once enough fat is obtained from the donor area, it is then purified and re-injected with special needles into the areas requiring augmentation. Sterile dressings are then placed over the incisions.
Recovery
Swelling, which is commonly seen after fat injection, usually resolves within 4-6 weeks. The degree of swelling is most dependent on the area injected. Dressings may be placed on the injected areas. These dressings may include the use of tapes or compressive-type dressings. You should avoid sitting or resting on these areas for at least 3 weeks after surgery.
