Plastic Surgeons don’t seem to agree on the relevancy of bras after breast augmentation. That being said, Dr. Sam Jejurikar of Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute believes that the right bra can make a huge difference after your breast augmentation. Not only do bras provide comfort by reducing the amount of post-operative swelling, but they can provide important external support to your breast implants as your body heals after surgery.
One key thing – unless Dr. Jejurikar has specifically told you otherwise, it is best to avoid an underwire bra after surgery. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, because breast sensation can be altered for a few weeks after surgery, an underwire can cut into the undersurface of the breast, leading to sores or wounds. Second, breast implants tend to sit a little high after surgery. Because we want the implants to drop, and because underwires tend to push up on the implants, an underwire bra can actually prevent this from happening. In a few clinical situations, an underwire bra can be helpful, but Dr. Jejurikar will be sure to communicate this to you!
Dr. Jejurikar does put the vast majority of his patients in a bra immediately after surgery. Although effective, the postoperative surgical bra sometimes limits wardrobe choices for patients. With that in mind, we have compiled a list of some effective bras, none of which contain an underwire.
