Breast reconstructive surgery is often performed following a mastectomy, or if a woman has a congenital abnormality or a deformity in their chests that needs to be corrected. Another reason for reconstructive surgery is as the result of an accident or injury. Whatever the reason, restoring an attractive appearance to the chest is vital to maintaining self-esteem and a reinforcing a positive body image.
There are two main types of breast reconstructive surgery:
- Implant-based reconstruction, which uses saline or silicone gel implants to recreate the breast.
- Autologous tissue-based reconstruction, which uses donor tissue and fat that are relocated from other parts of the body, usually the abdomen or from the back.
Am I a candidate for Breast Reconstruction?
If you are in good overall health and do not smoke, you may be a good candidate for breast reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Jejurikar utilizes a variety of techniques to reconstruct breast tissue with the intent of it appearing as natural as possible. Some of the materials used to create breasts include: including implants, tissue expanders and a patient’s native tissues.
Breast reconstruction is performed under general anesthesia and recovery time can take several weeks or more depending on the extent and nature of the surgery.
Because breast reconstruction is a highly personal and individualized process, Dr. Jejurikar consults with his patients several times prior to surgery.
